Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration
2
Key Concepts Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration are how ALL living things get energy from their environment The reactants of photosynthesis are the products of cellular respiration The reactants of cellular respiration are the products of photosynthesis
3
What is it? Photosynthesis Cellular Respiration
Photosynthesis uses radiant energy from the sun to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose Cellular Respiration converts glucose into ATP using oxygen
4
Who does it? Photosynthesis Cellular Respiration
Photosynthetic organisms are producers. Producers make their own source of chemical energy. Photosynthetic organisms are Plants, Algae, & Cyanobacteria EVERY organism needs energy, so EVERY ORGANISM does cellular respiration!
5
Where does it happen? Photosynthesis Cellular Respiration Chloroplast
Chlorophyll, a pigment, absorbs the sunlight It happens in the grana & the stroma Mitochondria
6
More about Cellular Respiration…
Aerobic – oxygen is present Anaerobic – oxygen is not present Lactic Acid Fermentation A type of anaerobic respiration Occurs when your cells don’t get enough oxygen to do regular aerobic respiration Leads to lactic acid build up “Feel the burn!” This is what you feel in your muscles the day after a hard work out
