Write a paragraph explaining the following quote and how it connects to your life right now. Put it at the top of page 136 of your I.N. “We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now.” – Martin Luther King Jr

3 Tuesday January 22, 2019 Yellow dots, return any work in the red basket. Take out your essay packet. Open to page 23. Today you will begin constructing your introduction and begin writing your essay. When we are done working on the introduction, you will have the rest of the class period to finish things you have not finished or continue working on this part of the essay. This packet needs to be finished by Friday this week.

4 The Introduction The Hook A hook is something that grabs the reader.
It holds their attention so they will read further. The hook must connect to the rest of the essay in some way.

Interesting Fact/Statistic - best in informational, personal, and persuasive essays. Needs to connect directly with content Challenging opinion or claim- best in persuasive and personal essays. Needs to connect directly with content Interesting/ Connected Quote- Good for all essays. Needs to connect with the content in someway

6 Is this the right hook? Powerful rhetorical question- Not the best hook because it is over used. Best with persuasive essays Must connect to the subject Joke- Best in personal essays and informational essays. Must have a connection to the subject

9 Thursday January 24, 2019 Bell Ringer: Renaissance Test: Read everything below before you do anything else. Read everything below before you do anything else. All orange dots and only red dots from tables 1-3 need to find a computer spot around the room. Sign in to the computer and go to class link. Please do not take this time to check grades or do other things. Find the Renaissance tab and click on it. Select Take a reading test and start your test. When you finish, Log off the computer. Do not open any other screens for any reason even if you think it is harmless to do so. Work quietly on your essay packet for the rest of the class. Talking will get you 50 honor codes due tomorrow. They will double if you fail to turn them in tomorrow.
