Warm Up Solve the following: 3(8 – a) = 12
x + 75 > -125 , graph the solution. 4p + 8 = 2(p + 12)
2
Goal: The learner will solve inequalities with multiply and divide.
Lesson 3.5 Goal: The learner will solve inequalities with multiply and divide.
3
Say What? What happens if… Let’s work with -2 < 4,
What happens if we multiply 2 to both sides? What happens if we multiply -2 to both sides? Say What?
4
Works a lot like an equation, but not so much.
If you multiply or divide by a negative, then flip the direction of the inequality. Only with multiply and divide! Example 𝑚 −3 > x = 16
5
Do I need to flip the inequality?
7x < -63 -7x < 63 𝑥 3 >−24 𝑥 −3 >24
6
Examples Solve and graph the solution. 𝑛 6 >7 𝑡 −4 ≤8
𝑛 6 > 𝑡 −4 ≤8 2x > ≥ 14
7
Word Problem Some flocks of Canada geese can fly nonstop for up to 16 hours. In this time, a flock can migrate as far as 848 miles. At what average speeds can such a flock fly during migration? Remember Distance = Rate *Time. Flight Time * Average Flight speed ≤ Maximum flight distance.
8
Write the inequality and solve.
Five times a number is at least 45. A number divided by 4 is at most 8.
