1 Naming Acids & Bases

2 Today in Chemistry class…..
Review Acids & Bases Properties Bronsted-Lowry Designation Conjugate Base Pairs Naming!!!! Practice

3 Properties Acids Bases

4 Determine which reactant is the acid and which reactant is the base:
CH 3 COOH ( aq ) + OH − ( aq ) → CH 3 COO − ( aq ) + H 2 O ( l )   H 2 SO 4 ( aq ) + H 2 O ( l ) → H 3 O + ( aq ) + HSO 4 − ( aq )   PO 4 3− ( aq ) + H 3 O + ( aq ) ⇆ HPO 4 2− ( aq ) + H 2 O ( l ) HCl ( aq ) + KOH ( aq ) → H 2 O ( l ) + KCl ( aq )

5 H 2 O ( l ) + H 2 O ( l ) ⇆ H 3 O + ( aq ) + OH − ( aq )
The Brønsted-Lowry acid-base definitions are based on the amphiprotic properties of water: Water is capable of acting as both a hydrogen ion donor and a hydrogen ion acceptor, depending on the acidic or basic properties of the dissolved substance. Water can also act as a proton donor and proton acceptor towards itself. This is referred to as the autoionization of water

6 Naming Binary Acids: POGIL
All binary acids are named the same way: the prefix "hydro" is used. the root of the anion is used. the suffix "ic" is used. the word "acid" is used as the second word in the name. The name for HCl is hydrochloric acid.

7 Partner Swap: You will have two minutes to complete each chart/question with a partner When the time is up you will switch and find a new partner to complete the next question/chart with

8 DOL: Name the following binary compounds
1) H3PO4 8) hydrocyanic acid [this has a twist in it] 2) H2CO3 9) nitric acid 3) H2SO4 10) sulfurous acid 4) HIO3 11) phosphorous acid 5) HF 12) acetic acid 6) HNO2 7) hydrobromic acid

9 Trade and grade! 1) phosphoric acid
8) HCN [even though CN¯ is polyatomic, it is named according to the binary rule] 2) carbonic acid 3) sulfuric acid 9) HNO3 4) iodic acid 10) H2SO3 5) hydrofluoric acid 11) H3PO3 6) nitrous acid 12) CH3COOH or HC2H3O2 7) HBr
