1 The Amazing Brain!

2 Brain Plasticity If a part of the brain is damaged sometimes a different part of the brain can take over those functions.

3 How do we know about brain anatomy and functions?
Accidents Lesions MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

4 Brain Composition 78% water 10-12% lipids(a key part of living cells)
8% protein 1% carbs 2% soluble organics 1% inorganic salt

5 Brain Vitals 3 lbs. 100 billion neurons (same as the # of stars in the galaxy) ml of blood flow through it every minute (3 soda cans) The brain can stay alive 4-6 minutes without oxygen It is 2% of body weight but uses 20% of the body’s energy

6 Cerebellum The cerebellum contains half of all of the brain’s neurons, but comprises only 10% of the brain

7 Cerebrum The cerebrum is about 85% of the brain. The cerebral cortex is the outer edge of the cerebrum.

8 Evolution of the Brain Hindbrain-The oldest part of the brain. The human hindbrain is structurally very similar to the hindbrains of other vertebrates. It includes structures that carry out functions most essential for survival: sleeping/waking, breathing, blood flow

9 Midbrain

10 The Midbrain The midbrain is located above the hindbrain. All sensory and motor information passing back and forth between the forebrain and spinal cord must go through the midbrain. It contains important centers for regulating body movement in response to visual or auditory stimulation.

11 The Forebrain

12 The Forebrain Most prominent part of the mammalian brain.
The greatest difference between human brains and those of other primates is the size of the forebrain. Humans have considerably larger forebrains

13 The Frontal Lobe The advanced development of the frontal lobe enables humans to: -have goal-directed behavior -concentrate -control emotions and temperament *It is also involved in many aspects of personality.
