1 How to compare pairs of fractions with the same denominator.
10-1: Using Models to Compare Fractions with the Same Denominator Today we will learn… How to compare pairs of fractions with the same denominator.

2 How are the fractions 2/6 and 4/6 the same? How are they different?
Talk to your tables: How are the fractions 2/6 and 4/6 the same? How are they different?

3 Let’s do the first one together:
Joe and Dan both walk to school. Joe lives 5/8 of a mile from school. Dan lives 2/8 of a mile from school. Who walks the shorter distance to school? Use the fraction bars to help you compare. Joe Dan >

4 Now, Try this one with your Group
Sally painted 1/3 of the fence. Jane painted 2/3 of the fence. Who painted more of the fence. Use your fraction bar diagrams to color and label the amount each girl painted. Then, decide which fraction is bigger.

5 Use the back of your paper to answer This question with a partner.
Which is bigger, 2/4 or 1/4?

6 Now, try this one on your own.
Which is bigger, 1/6 or 3/6?

7 What is the pattern? Talk with your partner and see if you can figure out the rule for deciding which fraction is bigger when the denominators are the same. If two fractions have the Same Denominator, the fraction with the greater numerator is the GREATER fraction!

8 Let’s Try a Song to help us remember the rule!!
If the denominator is the same, Look up top, let’s play a game! Which is greater do you know? If it’s greater than he’ll eat it on the go!

9 Draw a Picture to Solve Carefully read the problem. Underline the question. [Bracket] important words and numbers.  Eliminate unnecessary information.   Solve and check your work. A relay race team has 4 members. The race is 2 miles long. Each member runs an equal part of the race. How far does each member run?
