Anatomy & Physiology Chapter 10: The Pulmonary System Waggy
2
Key Concepts Functions of the Pulmonary System
Follow the flow of air through the Upper Respiratory system Follow the flow of air through the Lower Respiratory system Muscles used to breathe Respiratory control Disorders of the pulmonary system
3
Functions of the Pulmonary System
4
The respiratory system is divided into
1. upper respiratory system, 2. lower respiratory system,
5
The Upper Respiratory System
Nasal hairs: Mucous secretions Nasal cavity opens into nasopharynx
6
The nasopharynx is shared by digestive and respiratory systems
Extends from nose to esophagus & has 3 sections: 1. Nasopharynx: 2. Oropharynx: 3. Laryngopharynx:
7
From the pharynx air enters the larynx:
During swallowing:
8
Sound Production As air passes through the glottis it vibrates vocal folds & produces sound waves
9
The Lower Respiratory System
From the upper respiratory system, air enters the trachea (windpipe)
10
The Primary bronchi begins to branch to form the Bronchial Tree
12
The Bronchial Tree
13
Left and right lungs The root The base
14
The Right Lung- Has 3 lobes:
The Left Lung- Has 2 lobes:
15
The lobes of the lungs split into Pulmonary Lobules,
17
Each lobule receives an arteriole from the pulmonary circuit and a venule that return to the heart
18
The Respiratory Cycle Consists of: 1. inspiration 2. Expiration
Tidal Volume:
19
Muscles of Inhalation Diaphragm: External intracostal muscles:
20
Muscles of Active Exhalation
21
Respiratory Centers of the Brain
Have both voluntary and involuntary components:
22
Diseases of the Pulmonary System
Respiratory Distress Pneumonia Bronchitis:
23
Asthma: Pulmonary Embolism: SIDS: Apnea:
24
Laryngeal Spasm: Sneezing & coughing: Pneumothorax: Atelectasis:
25
The Effects of Aging Elastic tissues deteriorate: Arthritic changes:
Emphysema:
26
The Respiratory Defense System
Goblet cells and mucous glands: Cilia: Filtration:
