3. Determining Effect/ Impact: Consider HOW the author’s choices create effects. Why did the author choose to use that specific diction or syntax? What is the function of that imagery or metaphor? How do these choices appeal to ETHOS, LOGOS, PATHOS? How do these choices help to support the ARGUMENT being made?
