1
Aerobic vs Anaerobic Respiration
Lactic Acid & Alcohol Fermentation
2
Aerobic Respiration Requires oxygen to create ATP energy
Main way that food is converted into usable energy Takes place in the mitochondria Very efficient 1 glucose molecule produces ATP molecules
3
Anaerobic Respiration
Doesn’t require oxygen to produce ATP Another way food is converted into energy Takes place in the cytoplasm Prokaryotes Cheese, yogurt, sour cream, and pickles Animals use this process when muscle cells are overworked over a short period of time. (Exercising) Fermentation Organisms living in low-oxygenated environments No mitochondria
4
Lactic Acid Fermentation
Animals and bacteria For short bursts of energy, exercising Converts glucose into 2ATP + Lactic Acid bCU20_M
5
Alcohol Fermentation Yeast and other microorganisms
Converts glucose into alcohol + CO2 + 2ATP Causes bread to rise Produces alcoholic beverages Both types of fermentation only produce 2ATP molecules for every 1 molecule of glucose.
