Motion
2
Before we get started How much do YOU know about motion?
What are two reasons why people are in favour of raising highway speed limits? What are three reasons why people are in favour of lowering highway speeds? Why have laws of the road been established? What are some laws of the road?
3
Distance Distance is the amount of space between two points.
We are Canadian, we use the metric system. Distance is in meters (m).
4
Time Time is the duration of time between two points.
Usually want it in seconds (s) or a convertible quantity Seconds (s), minutes (min), hour (h), days (days), years (years).
5
Speed Speed is the rate of motion.
Use meters per second (m/s) or kilometers per hour (km/h)
6
Putting it all together
7
Activity! One of the many skills in this chapter is being able to measure distance, time and speed. How do we do this? HANDS ON OF COURSE! In this activity we will focus on measuring distance. Get into groups of 2 with the person sitting beside you. Paper Airplanes Designs are up to you!
8
Paper Airplane Design (sketch)
Wingspan (cm) Distance (m) 1st Plane 1. __________ 2. __________ 3. __________ Avg.__________ 2nd Plane 3rd Plane

Questions for tomorrow
Which design covered the most distance? Why do you think this is the case? Which design covered the least distance? Why do you think this is the case? How accurate do you think your measurements were? Why do you think an average was used to determine the distances covered by the different airplane designs?
