3. French Colonialism France colonizes “Indochina”
Mid 1800s: France violently took over Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam and called the area “Indochina”
Main Goals:
“Civilize” the people with Western culture, religion, language, and government.

4. Rebellions & Revolution
WWII ( ) was a turning point for Vietnam’s struggle for independence.
1940: Germany invaded France
France is forced to give up control of Indochina to Germany’s ally: Japan
1941: The Viet Minh is formed
Nationalist movement led by Ho Chi Minh that called for Vietnamese independence
March 1945: Japan removed the French from Vietnam
August 14, 1945: US drops the Atomic bomb & Japan surrenders to Allies

August 19, 1945: Viet Minh revolutionaries seized power in Hanoi August Rev
August 25, 1945: Emperor of South Vietnam turned over control to Viet Minh.
September 1945: North: Ho Chi Minh declares the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV)
1946: No peace in Vietnam, France comes back to re-colonize.
