Air Fronts
2
What’s a front? L Boundaries between air masses L Pressure forms
Warmer mass gets pushed above cold mass (density) L
3
Warm front Moist/warm air mass slides up over cold air mass
Clouds, light/moderate rain/snow If temps between air masses vary greatly thunderstorms may occur When front passes warm temps/clear skies
4
Cold Front Cold air mass pushes under warm air, forcing warm air to rise quickly Violent storms, heavy rain/hail short lived When front passes cooler temps
5
Occluded Front Warm air mass gets caught between 2 cold air masses The warm air mass rises as the cold air mass pushes/meets other cold air mass in the middle Strong wind/heavy rain, cold temps
6
Stationary Front When masses don’t override one another no/little movement Clouds/fog If cold starts to “win” moderate rain/snow

P. 86 in NB: Take a blank sheet of paper hold it horizontally and fold it so that the sides meet in the middle (“French doors”) Cut the “doors” in half so that you have 4 flaps
