President Washington chose a position of neutrality. He believed that America should not get entangled in the internal affairs of other nations

The Monroe Doctrine Declaration by President James Monroe (1823): the U.S would not tolerate a European nation re-colonizing an independent nation in North or South America. * Any such intervention would be considered a hostile act by the United States.
