2 The French Revolution 1789 - Americans welcomed the French Revolution.
1790s – French Revolution entered a violent stage. This divided Americans.

3 George Washington's Neutrality Proclamation
President Washington chose a position of neutrality. He believed that America should not get entangled in the internal affairs of other nations

5 By 1800 – Spain’s colonies eager for independence.
1816 – Argentinean independence 1818 – Chilean independence 1821 – Mexican and Peruvian independence 1822 – Ecuador

6 The Monroe Doctrine Declaration by President James Monroe (1823): the U.S would not tolerate a European nation re-colonizing an independent nation in North or South America. * Any such intervention would be considered a hostile act by the United States.
