The American System Plan created by Henry Clay of Kentucky to make the country stronger & promote nationalism- The American System Components of the plan: 1. Create a protective tariff to promote American manufacturing. Raised tariffs on imports 20% 2. Internal improvements- build roads & canals that were funded by tariff. 3. Create a Second Bank of the United States to stabilize currency

Major Roads & Canals Internal Improvements
1. The National Road- stretched from Cumberland, Maryland to Wheeling, Virginia. 2. The Erie Canal- Created in New York to connect the Great lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. Great for trade & opened a fast route to the west. 3. Steamboats- allowed travel both up & down the Mississippi & western rivers 4. Railroads- miles of track connected major cities. North united/South not

Trails to the West 1. Oregon Trail
2. Mormon Trail- led to Utah & created by Mormon leader Brigham Young to escape persecution (polygamy) 3. California Trail- created by Gold Rush of 1849 4. Santa Fe Trail- route established to increase trade with Mexico. Increased interest in the southwest

The Influence of Monroe
Presidency a time to renew country- known as the “Era of Good Feelings” American system in full swing- many improvements made & political unity achieved Monroe worked to strengthen the country by maintaining our neutrality & practicing a policy of isolation.

The Monroe Doctrine Policy created by President Monroe which stated:
1. The U.S. would not interfere in the affairs of European or other countries in the Americas 2. The U.S. would oppose any European intervention in the affairs of any countries in the Americas 3. Any European intervention in the Americas would be viewed as a hostile move. (unfriendly act) 4. Monroe declared that the American continents were closed to colonization. Allowed U.S. to practice isolationism for the next 100 years.

America Gets Florida! Monroe sends Andrew Jackson to the border of Spanish Florida to control Seminole Indian raids across the border Jackson instead invades Florida & takes it over removing the Spanish governor! Spain gives Florida to us in the Adams-Onis Treaty= they just give it to us to avoid conflict!
