2 ENERGY WHAT WE THINK WE KNOW

3 WHAT IS ENERGY?

4 What is happening here?

5 The car is moving because the engine is doing work
The car is moving because the engine is doing work. The fuel in the tank gives it its ENERGY.

6 So ENERGY has something to do with WORK.
When a car is out of Fuel it cannot move. The engine cannot do work. So ENERGY has something to do with WORK.

7 ENERGY is defined as the ability or capacity to do WORK.
…Well…..What is WORK?...... Consider Lightning Mc Queen again……

8 How do we know that the fuel in the tank provides energy to the engine and that the engine is doing work?..... Because Lightning Mc Queen can drive around the track. So the work done by the engine is evident by the distance moved by the car.

9 So…What exactly is the engine doing to cause the car to move?

10 Work done by a Force on an object is the product of the force and the distance moved by the object in the direction of the force. W = F x d Where F is the applied force d is the displacement of the object and W is the work done by the force

11 Next class we will … develop this Work thing more and look at forms of energy
