1 Cladograms and Hominid Skulls
Unit Two, Day 13 Cladograms and Hominid Skulls

2 Opener 5 minutes Turn and talk to your neighbor on what was easy or difficult about the lab report you had to write.

3 Agenda Hominid Skulls Homework: read and annotate article Monday: assessment on speciation and cladograms

4 New Learning Targets I can analyze the data provided by a phylogenetic tree or cladogram to determine the evolutionary history of the organisms described in the diagram In short: I can read cladograms I can use a data set to create a cladogram that represents a reasonable hypothesis about the evolutionary history of a group of related organisms In short: I can make a cladogram

5 Hominid Skulls

6 Share out Traits we could potentially measure
Brain Capacity Length of the jaw Muzzle Size U or V shaped Jaw Canines and Molars Sagittal Crest (skull hawk) Location of the Foraman magnum Flat face or Angled face Supra Orbital Ridge Zygomatic arch: prominent or not

7 Hominid Cladogram Do: Use the data you collected, and the groupings of taxa you made, to create a cladogram showing the evolutionary relationships between the taxa represented by the skulls First: make a rough draft on a white board. THEN, transfer to poster paper. Hints: Use the fossil data Some of the skulls belong to the same taxon Some of the clades you identified might need further division Looking at which skulls SHARE traits might be helpful
