Algebra Concepts Section 2.6 Solve Equations by Multiplying or Dividing
2
What operation does the expression 5v have?
Recall 5v means 5 times v. To “undo” multiplication in an equation, do division. Multiplication and division are inverse operations.
4
Solve the equation 4𝑥=20
5
T o check the solution- Write the original problem x=20 Substitute the solution in (5) ? 20 Simplify =20
6
If the variable is divided by a number, multiply to “undo” the division.
Solve 𝑥 4 =9
7
Do the check for that problem
𝑥 4 =9 ? 9 9=9
8
Solve for x and check! #1 𝑥 −2 =10 #2 7= 𝑥 50 #3 𝑥 7 =−1 #4 𝑥 −8 =−4 #5 𝑥 6 =0
9
Mixing things up! Solve for the variable! #1 5𝑥=17 #2 𝑚 −4 =2
#1 5𝑥=17 #2 𝑚 −4 =2 #3 𝑔 10 =−9 #4 −3𝑥=9
10
Write an equation The product of three and a number is twenty-seven.
