1 Bellringer: T1D19 Which of the Middle Colonies was your favorite? Explain why:

2 U.S. History I Ch. 3.4: Southern Colonies

3 Coming to America The New World was a new chance for many, but it required hard work / labor. So, the demand for good laborers was high. Many came as indentured servants, hoping to earn some land of their own, as did many criminals, who were promised freedom after working (often for 7 years). African slaves were also a hot commodity, since they worked hard and weren’t as susceptible to the diseases that wiped out many of the Native Americans.

4 Southern Colonies Jigsaw Presentation
Ok, so for the rest of the period, you’ll be dividing up into 6 different groups (no larger than 4 people / group please). You’ll be picking one of the following topics (with listed subtopics, which you’ll initially research out of the book): Coming to America / Maryland (“Establishing Maryland”-“Act of Toleration” pp ) Virginia Expands (“Bacon’s Rebellion,” Margaret Brent, etc., pp 88-89) Settling the Carolinas (“North & South Carolina-Slave Labor” pp 89-90) Georgia (“Oglethorpe’s Town”-“The Colony Changes” pp 90-91) New France (“Down the Mississippi River (“Growth of New France” pp 92) New Spain (“Missions in California”-“European conflicts in North America” pp 92-93) You’ll first read the material as a group, and create an outline for a presentation. Make sure to cover all subtopics (red lettering), as well as bolded terms / people / etc. You’ll do this for ~15 minutes. Once you’ve completed your outline and let me see it, and I approve, you’ll then grab a chromebook, and begin creating a google slideshow. Meanwhile, some of you ought to be researching further your topic.

5 Presentation, Continued:
See below for the requirements: Include a title slide, naming the people in your group, and the title for your presentation. Make sure to include and define ALL bolded &/or highlighted terms (blue), as well as cover subsections (in red) in the textbook Include at least 1 relevant picture per slide, and restate the information in your own words (we can tell if it isn’t). Don’t include more than 2-3 short paragraphs of info on any given slide, otherwise it is too much to absorb. Use bullet points to help present the info in chunks. Cover the information in the textbook, and also go beyond. Share something we might not know otherwise! Include a short 1-ish minute long video &/OR a class activity. EC for good activities. Include at the bottom of each slide where the picture / info came from, and slide # / slideshow for reference. Don’t just read from the slideshow; use it as a reference, but remember to talk to the class, not the projector. Conclude, reemphasizing / explaining what you learned, and how this information is useful. When you present, be ready to share / present for roughly 5 minutes.

6 One Last Note: Also, you will be turning in a paragraph summarizing your group work experience (what did you do, how did you contribute, etc.). Explain what grade you feel you deserve (out of 15 total points), and what grade you think the other members of your group deserve (also out of 15 total points), and explain why. This will be added to your presentation grade of 50 points, for a total of 65 points. I will be giving this grade based on your self-evaluation, as well as your groupmates’ assessment. Also… this assignment will replace the Ch. 3 test. I have given you full credit for the test…you’re welcome! Make sure you are all caught up otherwise…nothing else is due.
