Meteorology
2
Composition of the Atmosphere
3
1. The main gases of the atmosphere were….
Carbon dioxide Sulfur dioxide Water vapor Nitrogen
4
2. Oxygen entered the atmosphere by…
Photosynthesis Sunlight breaking apart the H2O into H and O
5
3. The gas that is most abundant in the atmosphere
(probably not what you think it is!!!!) Nitrogen
6
4. Three ways heat moves… Conduction (through touch) Radiation (through light waves) Convection (heat rises, cools and sinks, repeat)
7
5. Explain how these are used to heat water.
Conduction- Burner heats the pan and the pan heats the water through touch Convection – Hot bottom of pan rises, cooler water takes it place. Hot top, cools cuz it’s away from the heat source, sinks. Repeats. Radiation – light waves from the burner will heat the solid/liquid objects close by.
8
Troposphere Closest to Earth’s surface 0 to 16 km Temperature DECREASES with altitude Weather occurs here Contains 80% of total mass of atmosphere
9
Stratosphere Above the troposphere 16 to 50 km Temperature INCREASES with altitude The OZONE layer is here
10
Mesosphere Above the stratosphere 50 to 90 km Temperature DECREASES with altitude Coldest layer
11
Thermosphere Highest layer 90 km into space Temperature INCREASES (lots of sun!) Layers of molecules – N, O, He, H Ionosphere (90 to 500 km) and Exosphere (500km to space)
