1
Characteristics of Life Unity within Diversity
2
What do Biologists do? Study the diversity of life Research diseases
3
What do Biologists do? 3. Develop technologies 4. Improve agriculture
4
What do Biologists do? 5. Preserve the environment
5
Response vs. Stimulus Stimulus: Anything that is part of either environment (internal or external) and causes some sort of reaction by organism. Response: reaction to a stimulus
6
Response vs. Stimulus Examples
The plant bends toward the light. An animal is cold so it moves into the sun. Getting a drink when you are thirsty. A snake lunges at a rabbit.
7
Living!
8
Non-living!
9
Characteristics of Life
They can be remembered by the mnemonic: Hog Racer
10
Characteristics of Life
H: Homeostasis O: Organization G: Growth and Development R: Reproduction A: Adaptations C: Cells E: Energy R: Respond to Stimuli
11
Homeostasis Maintaining relatively stable internal conditions despite external surroundings Examples: Regulating Body Temperatures Controlling glucose levels in body
12
Organization Living things are organized
13
Growth and Development
Types of growth: Cell division increasing the number of cells Example: Skin Cells Cell enlargement increasing the size of a cell Example: Muscle Cells
14
Reproduction Production of Offspring Sexual: Involves egg and sperm
Asexual: Cloning, budding, self fertilization
15
Adaptations Ability to survive in one’s environment
16
Cells Basic building blocks of life Unicellular: One cell
Multicellular: More than one cell
17
Energy Living organisms use energy Autotrophs make their own food
Heterotrophs : depend upon autotrophs for energy
18
Respond to Stimuli Stimulus creates a response
19
Learning Checkpoint R A C E H O G
20
Misconceptions Senses (see, hear, taste, touch, smell) Uses oxygen
Produces carbon dioxide Movement These are NOT necessary in order to be considered alive.
