1.2 Biology: LEVELS OF ORGANIZATION
2
Key Concepts and Vocab Key Concepts Vocabulary:
How are living things organized? What makes up our environment and where do we fit in? Species Organism Population Community Ecosystem Biosphere
3
The Diversity of Life Biotic = Living and Abiotic = Non-living
Living and Non-Living Biotic = Living and Abiotic = Non-living Organism – any living thing. Environment – the living and non living things that make up an organisms surroundings.
4
REVIEW 7 Characteristics of all Life
Composed of cells (highly organized) Made of the same Chemicals of Life Respond to stimulus - Homeostasis Use energy for growth and maintenance Reproduce Grow and develop Adapt to their environments (evolve)
5
So what the heck is a species?
Species – an interbreeding population of organisms that can produce healthy, fertile offspring.
6
Levels of Organization: What makes up a species?
7
Levels of Interaction Population – Group of organisms of the same species. Community – populations of dif. Species interacting in the same area. Ecosystem – a community of organisms interacting with the non-living factors in their environment. Biosphere – The parts of the earth that sustain life. Land, water, and air. (all ecosystems)
