CIMug Focus Communities
Address: A high-priority need Where wide input is needed: Utilities Vendors Universities IEC WG experts Supported by IEC WG Technical Team Facilitate quicker, real-world-based updates of CIM standards Asset Health is first, more are coming..

Asset Management at Utilities
The Business Challenge Aging fleet past design life Limited resources Increased regulatory / media pressure Heuristic decision-making Time-based maintenance is default Replace? Repair? Monitor? Heuristic (seat-of-the-pants) decision making… something that is becoming less possible with the departure of seasoned utility engineers as the utility work force ages. The Business Need Accurate insight into asset health for accurate decision-making

Asset Management at Utilities
. The IT Challenge Data location field measurements . Data format . maintenance test Data stewardship nameplate inspection Compounded by New Technological Opportunites Modern sensing technologies New communication solutions In the typical utility, there is actually a wealth of existing information available that could shed light on the health of assets. The problem is getting to it in any kind of efficient fashion.. Compounded by the new available information The IT Need A way to organize disparate information from a variety of sources ?

Asset Health Focus Community Work
Envision a CIM model-based architecture Enables analytics Supports enterprise-wide asset health insight With real-world utility and vendor input Define asset health use cases using IRM Suggest refinements and enhancements to the asset- related portions of the CIM model Create a data framework for: Organizing data Supporting analysis of what matters Product development Of course, the obvious answer is to model that shared data effectively in the CIM. And that’s what the AHFC was set up to help do. The work of the FC, which was started a little over a year ago, started by

Typical utility practice Aggregate data from multiple sources Generate asset health and risk assessments based on the data Generate asset health events when assessment indicates significant change in health conditions has occurred Make data available to other systems/tools as needed/requested The AHFC started out by exploring the existing asset health analysis environment at utilities…

Asset Health Information Modeling in the CIM
Overview of CIM Classes for Asset Health 61970 61968 Nameplate, Model, Manufacturer Network Model Asset Identity, Components Asset Procedures, Results Measurements

Asset Health Information Modeling in the CIM
Sample Instance Diagram with Packages 61970 61968 Nameplate, Model, Manufacturer Network Model Asset Identity, Components Another way to look at how the CIM supports asset health information modeling would be to look at an instance diagram. So, here is a typical asset, with it’s components. The diagram illustrates the CIM package (…list them…) that contains the classes used. And the instances reflect that same grouping of information we saw just a minute ago on the class diagram. Asset Procedures, Results Measurements

Asset Health Information Modeling in the CIM
Sample Instance Diagram with Packages 61970 61968 The AHFC is a collection of folks that are both CIM-savvy and not, so as a way to get started that was a bit more familiar territory than some of the esoteric CIM modeling “stuff”, we focused on a common procedure and result: DGA analysis of transformer tank oil. We did a survey and got a good feel for the typical information that is provided as a result. Which is good information which we can provide to the WG13/14 technical team. Asset Procedures, Results

Asset Health Information Modeling in the CIM
Sample Instance Diagram with Packages 61970 61968 Nameplate, Model, Manufacturer Asset Identity, Components But it also helped us realize that there was a foundational piece of modeling that we probably needed to tackle. DGA results relate typically to transformer tank oil. But should our interoperability model be associating those results with the transformer, the tank or the oil? And what about the difference between 3-tank and 1-tank transformers? How do those play in what you tack a DGA test result to? So, it seemed that clarifying the core part of the CIM model – the asset identify and component part (with some consideration of the nameplate, model and manufacturer part) was probably a really good piece of work to start on. ?

Asset Health Focus Community Work
Asset component ‘templates’ for common assets Asset & AssetContainer usage AssetInfo child classes Starting with breakers
14
Asset Health Focus Community Work
Template Example – SF6 Dead Tank Breaker What Asset and AssetContainer instances should be used to model this type of asset? In the case of an SF6 Dead Tank Breake, maybe we have:… Template Instances used to describe an asset of a specific type
15
Asset Health Focus Community Work
Templates Provide model-based way of organizing other asset health information (nameplate/model/manufacturer and procedure results) Enable application interoperability Will probably become IEC “Technical Specifications” not “International Standards” A skeleton off which important asset information can be ‘hung’
16
Asset Health Focus Community Work
Upcoming activities Identify common breaker types Create draft templates for each breaker type Based on community understanding of what information is available and what components merit modeling Use existing CIM as starting point and suggest enhancements as appropriate Document using Enterprise Architect instance models Move to transformer templates next?
17
Asset Health Focus Community Work
Common Breaker Types Transmission SF6 dead tank OCB dead tank SF6 live tank Air blast (live tank) Distribution SF6 OCB Vacuum Air blast Air magnetic Have list of common breaker types. Have starting point instance templates for several of those breaker types (but know they’re not right…)
