3 Types of Rocks Vocabulary
2
Erosion Erosion occurs when weathered materials are carried away, usually by wind, water, or ice.
3
Weathering The process that crumbles, cracks, and breaks rocks into sediments.
4
Igneous Rocks These rocks form when melted rock (magma) cools and hardens.
5
Metamorphic Rock This is a rock that has changed form through heat and pressure.
6
Sedimentary Rock This rock forms from sediment layers pressing together and cementing into solid rocks.
7
Lithification The process that turns sediments into stone.
8
This is the hot molten rock inside the Earth.
Magma This is the hot molten rock inside the Earth.
9
Minerals A substance found in nature that is not a plant or animal. They are the building blocks of rocks.
10
Plates Earth’s crust broken into sections called plates. These plates move very slowly. When plates collide, a mountain is formed.
11
Rock Cycle The rock cycle is made up of the 3 principal types of rocks (sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous). They can change into either of the 2 other types of rock, or even into other rocks of their own type.
