1 3 Types of Rocks Vocabulary

2 Erosion Erosion occurs when weathered materials are carried away, usually by wind, water, or ice.

3 Weathering The process that crumbles, cracks, and breaks rocks into sediments.

4 Igneous Rocks These rocks form when melted rock (magma) cools and hardens.

5 Metamorphic Rock This is a rock that has changed form through heat and pressure.

6 Sedimentary Rock This rock forms from sediment layers pressing together and cementing into solid rocks.

7 Lithification The process that turns sediments into stone.

8 This is the hot molten rock inside the Earth.
Magma This is the hot molten rock inside the Earth.

9 Minerals A substance found in nature that is not a plant or animal. They are the building blocks of rocks.

10 Plates Earth’s crust broken into sections called plates. These plates move very slowly. When plates collide, a mountain is formed.

11 Rock Cycle The rock cycle is made up of the 3 principal types of rocks (sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous). They can change into either of the 2 other types of rock, or even into other rocks of their own type.
