1 The temperature of a solvent affects how much solute can dissolve
Hypothesis The temperature of a solvent affects how much solute can dissolve

2 Key words definitions 7 ‘S’ words
Soluble substances that can dissolve are soluble. Solute the substance that dissolves is called the solute. Solvent the liquid in the solution is the solvent. Solution the mixture formed when a substance dissolves is called the solution. Saturated if a lot of solute is added to the solvent, eventually no more will dissolve and we get a saturated solution. Sediment at the bottom of a saturated solution there can be a layer of un- dissolved solute called the sediment. Solubility the amount of solute that can dissolve in a solvent is called its solubility

3 How temperature affects solubility
You are going to find out if the temperature of a solvent affects how much solute will dissolve. Planning the investigation When planning, think about the following questions. • How will you know when no more solute will dissolve? • What is a variable? • What variable are you going to change and which will you keep the same? o the temperature of the solvent o the amount of solvent o the amount of solute o the temperature of the solute • What will you measure? o the amount of solute used o the amount of water used • What equipment will you need? • How can you measure accurately the amount of solute added to the solvent at different temperatures? • How many temperatures should you change to collect an accurate range of results?
