2 Overview of Respiration
cellular respiration: the process that releases energy by breaking down molecules in food in the presence of O2 aerobic: processes that require oxygen 6O2 + C6H12O6  6CO2 + 6H2O oxygen + glucose  carbon dioxide + water pyruvic acid produced in cytoplasm goes into mitochondria where further energy is released for ATP

10 Electron Transport Chain
a series of carrier proteins located in the inner membrane of the mitochondrion, takes electrons from NADH and FADH2 from the other reactions used to convert ADP to ATP As the electron move they pump H+ across the membrane as H+ is diffuse back across the membrane from inside an ATP synthetase uses the energy to convert ADP to ATP each pair of electrons provides enough energy to produce 3 ATP molecules Requires oxygen

12 The Energy Totals How much total energy does a single molecule of glucose yield? glycolysis yields a net 2 ATP Krebs yields 2 ATP Electron transport yields 32 ATP the 36 ATP molecules represents 38% of the energy from glucose the remaining 62% is released as heat
