What is evidence of secularization from yesterday’s lesson? What is evidence of the bourgeoisie bias from yesterday’s lesson? What are the parliamentary bodies you’ve read about so far? (3) What are the political groups in French society? (3) What are the different groups within French society? (9) What were the reactions of other people and governments in Europe to the Revolution? Pro and con. What problems are developing in French society after the start of the Revolution?

3 Attitude Towards the King
Previous to his flight the king had been seen as the father of the people (a good king badly advised) In 1790 he had taken an oath to support the constitution and was popular with the people However, public opinion drastically changed after his “flight” Bio.true story, Louis XVI Biography, , (Oct. 16, 2013).

The first trial determined that he was guilty of treason  most were in agreement on this issue (693 to 28) The second trial was to determine his punishment  this is where we see a division (Jacobins vs. Girondins) (387 supported execution, 334 imprisonment or exile) moderate 5 3 2 6 radical 1 conservative 7

9 The Terror There is a legitimate fear of counter revolution and a climate of radicalism as France is losing the war and facing enemies. The new Jacobin government fears losing control It’s a crisis
