3. Attitude Towards the King
Previous to his flight the king had been seen as the father of the people (a good king badly advised)
In 1790 he had taken an oath to support the constitution and was popular with the people
However, public opinion drastically changed after his “flight”

The first trial determined that he was guilty of treason  most were in agreement on this issue (693 to 28)
The second trial was to determine his punishment  this is where we see a division (Jacobins vs. Girondins) (387 supported execution, 334 imprisonment or exile)
