1 Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

2 Review! Where does photosynthesis occur in a plant?

3 Review! What is the function of chlorophyll?

4 Review! What kind of energy starts the process of photosynthesis and where does this energy come from?

5 Photosynthesis There are 4 ingredients (reactants) required for photosynthesis to occur Photosynthetic organisms make 2 products in the process of photosynthesis

6 1st Ingredient: Sunlight
Energy from the sun must be present for photosynthesis to occur Sunlight is absorbed by chlorophyll in the chloroplasts of the leaf

7 2nd Ingredient: Carbon Dioxide
Carbon dioxide enters the leaf through the stomata on the underside of the leaf Carbon dioxide comes from the atmosphere

8 3rd Ingredient: Water Water enters the plant through the roots and moves upward to the leaf

9 4th Ingredient: Chlorophyll
Located in the chloroplasts Absorbs sunlight so the process of photosynthesis can occur

10 1st Product: Glucose Glucose is produced and used by the plant for energy Plants store some of the glucose for later use as starch Plants use glucose to make cellulose

11 2nd Product: Oxygen Oxygen is a byproduct of photosynthesis
Oxygen is released into the atmosphere through the stomata on the underside of the leaf

12 Photosynthesis Equation
6CO2 + 6H2O > C6H12O6 + 6O2 CO2 = Carbon Dioxide C6H12O6 = Glucose H2O = Water O2 = Oxygen *We put sunlight and chlorophyll over the arrow because they are components required for photosynthesis but not compounds that react to make the new products Sunlight Chlorophyll

13 What happens to the glucose and oxygen?
Glucose provides energy for cells in almost all living organisms Oxygen and glucose are used in the process of cellular respiration to release energy

14 Cellular respiration Takes place in the mitochondria of cells in both plants and animals Cellular respiration is used to obtain energy from our food (glucose) Reaction is the opposite of photosynthesis

15 H2O C6H12O6 Reactants Products CO2 O2 ATP
