What are calories? Calories- Measurement of energy that a food or beverage provides Protein – 4 calories/ gram Carbohydrates- 4 calories/ gram Fat- 9 calories/ gram

What are nutrients? Nutrients- needed for growth and maintaining health They include: Carbohydrates Protein Fat Vitamins Minerals

Calorie dense food vs. Nutrient dense food
Calorie dense has more calories, but is low in nutrients Nutrient dense has more nutrients, but is low in calories Snickers vs. Strawberries

Food label exercise 1) Identify grams of sugar
2) Multiply grams of sugar by 4 3) Multiply that by No. servings per container 4) Gives us Calories from sugar 96 calories from sugar
