Air Masses and Weather Fronts
Subtitle
2
A pocket of air that has similar properties of temperature and humidity is known as an air mass.
Maritime Polar (mP) – Formed over cold oceans Cool/Cold and Humid Maritime Tropical (mT) – Formed over warm oceans Warm and Humid Continental Polar (cP) – Formed over cool land Cool and Dry Continental Tropical (cT) – Formed over warm land Warm and Dry
3
Different types of Air Masses over the Globe
5
The location where two air masses meet is known as a front.
6
Cold Front: warmer air is replaced by colder air.
Before While Passing After Temperature Warmer Sudden Drop Steady Drop Pressure Falling Sharp Rise Steady Rise wind South North
7
Warm Front: cooler air is replaced by warm air
Before While Passing After Temperature Cool/Cold Steadily Warmer Warmer then Steady Pressure Falling Level Slight Rise, then Fall
8
Stationary Front: boundary between warm and cold air that isn’t moving.
Often associated with prolonged rainy weather.
9
Occluded Front: When a cold front outruns a warm front in a large cyclone.
