Structures of the Muscular System
More that 600 muscles – found under the skin. Tendons – A tendon is a tough band of connective tissue that usually connects muscle to bone and is capable of withstanding tension.

Three Types of Muscles The 3 types of muscle tissue are cardiac, smooth, and skeletal. 1. Cardiac muscle == makes up the heart; striated; involuntary control.

2. Smooth muscle make up internal organs, except the heart: involuntary control.

3. Skeletal muscle attached to the skeleton; striated; voluntary control.

Skeletal muscle is found throughout the body.
Cardiac muscle is ONLY in the heart. Smooth muscle is found within inner organs.

Two Groups of Muscles Voluntary Muscles – muscles that we can control. Example: skeletal muscles, arm, legs, facial muscles. Involuntary Muscles – muscles that we cannot control. Example: heart, stomach, esophagus, intestines.
