Learning Enhances Awareness LEA – IJMA3 2008 Learning Enhances Awareness LEA 2008

Learning Enhances Awareness LEA – IJMA3 2008 LEA Objectives Combining enhancing lab structure, procedures & workflow Developing, training, and building human ICT capacity to a sizeable group of teachers & students Encouraging the usage of ICT applications in schools in a simplified manner by introducing them into classroom teaching The LEA Model assists ICTs adoption within schools by integrating it via the teachers into classrooms through: Assessment The LEA program concept was developed based upon an Assessment conducted in multiple schools around Lebanon

Learning Enhances Awareness LEA – IJMA3 2008 LEA Approach Overhead Projector Scientific Calculator ICTs adoption The LEA Model assists ICTs adoption within schools and students by integrating it via the teachers into classrooms, based on the following two theories: The teacher is the Key of Success

Learning Enhances Awareness LEA – IJMA3 2008 LEA Approach: ICTs Adoption within classrooms Overhead Projector The teacher had his coursework photocopied onto transparencies, and all he had to do is place them on the overhead in class Upon completion of the LEA model, the Lab team will assist the teacher in: - Preparing their presentation as well as other documents - Installing the equipment in class - Testing the whole system and make sure its operational

Learning Enhances Awareness LEA – IJMA3 2008 Scientific Calculator Once teachers realized how useful the scientific calculator was, it was required for students to use it in class LEA Approach: ICTs Adoption within Students Upon completion of the LEA model, the teacher will: - Be aware of the computer facilities - Request typed documents & sophisticated projects using the ICT tool.

Learning Enhances Awareness LEA – IJMA3 2008 LEA Project Phases The LEA includes a four-phase approach to be implemented in the schools around Lebanon in order to build ICT capacity and introduce ICT use in schools in a simplified manner: Phase IPhase IIPhase III Phase I: Workshop Sessions & Capacity Building Phase II: Providing Projection Facilities Phase III: Integrating ICT into Classroom Phase IV: Awareness Raising Session Phase IV

Learning Enhances Awareness LEA – IJMA3 2008 Pre-Phase: General Assessment The ICT infrastructure is available in all schools, but few actually make use of it. ICT is typically considered as a burden instead of being an enabler People are not aware of the ways in which ICT can facilitate their daily tasks ICT is a facilitator for teaching In order to determine the ICT degree of adoption in schools, an assessment was conducted and we realized the following:

Learning Enhances Awareness LEA – IJMA3 2008 Phase I. Workshop Sessions & Capacity building Computer Lab Administration Knowledge Base LEA Model

Learning Enhances Awareness LEA – IJMA3 2008 The LEA concept involves: Developing the ICT skills and capacities of teachers and students in schools; Making school labs operational; Maintaining ICT equipment at optimum levels; and Providing incentives to maintain quality operations over the long-term. Phase I. Workshop Sessions & Capacity building The attendees from each school have to be: - 8 school teachers (4 for the introduction level & 4 for the Intermediate level / Lab) - And 12 students (6 for the introduction level & 6 for the Intermediate level / Lab).

Learning Enhances Awareness LEA – IJMA3 2008 Workshop Training Sessions : Curriculum Introductory Session: Fundamental applications overview provides beginners with an introduction to the PC and primary software applications, enabling them to feel at ease with its use Introductory Session: Timing: 4 x ½ Days Intermediate Session: Creates awareness about available tools and software applications to help intermediate PC users benefit from advanced software packages Intermediate Session: Timing: 2 x ½ Days Lab Session: These sessions will build skills at managing and solving laboratory problems and daily troubleshooting operations Lab Session: Timing: 2 x ½ Days The Model Session: This session aims to establish a team of 4 people at each school, including one teacher and three students, who will oversee ICT troubleshooting operations, and keep ICT labs functioning The Model Session: Timing: 1 x ½ Day

Learning Enhances Awareness LEA – IJMA3 2008 Phase II. Providing Projection Facilities Some equipment, such as projectors and laptops, is required in order to facilitate improve use of technology in classrooms. If they are easy to carry and to install into classrooms, teachers will use them to teach, thus creating an enabling environment for ICT. All schools to receive assistance already have a computer lab. Our motive is to ensure internet connectivity for all lab computers, upgrade the labs usefulness by the provision of projectors, and making the labs accessible for all students.

Learning Enhances Awareness LEA – IJMA3 2008 Phase III. Integrating ICT into Classroom Lab Model Cycle Lab Manager Teacher Lab Team Request for assistance (Provide documents) Lab Manager assigns the task to one of the students Teacher & Student from Lab Team 2 days later, the teacher & the student in charge meet for a final review of the presentation The LEA Model team consists of one lab manager and 10 qualified students who successfully completed the workshop sessions. However, the Lab Manager will work at first with a group of three students as the Lab Team who shall be responsible of assisting schools teachers based on the following cycle: T h e t e a c h e r w i l l r e s e r v e t h e e q u i p m e n t o n a u s a g e s h e e t 3 d a y s p r i o r t o t h e i n t e n d e d d a t e o f u s e On the reserved day, the student will install the equipment in classroom Teacher in Class

Learning Enhances Awareness LEA – IJMA3 2008 Technical Support Team As regular maintenance is very important for the proper functioning of computer labs, an on-site maintenance and technical support team will be built. The successful 8 trainees (3 teachers & 5 students) of the Intermediate sessions who attended the Lab sessions and the LEA MODEL will be able to handle any computer deficiency (hardware & software) on the spot. They will also be responsible for the maintenance of all onsite computers.

Learning Enhances Awareness LEA – IJMA3 2008 Phase IV. Awareness Raising Session TeachersStudents Raise awareness about the facilities available at the School Lab and the way to access them AdministrationParents Presentation Introducing the LEA Model Targeted Audience :

Learning Enhances Awareness LEA – IJMA3 2008 Monitoring & Evaluation In order that the achievement of program goals can be most effectively tracked, both during the program and following its completion, a set of qualitative and quantitative indicators will be developed to measure the progress of the model, its adoption in schools, and its success in meeting the objectives set forth in the model. The Monitoring and Evaluation process will be completed during the two months that will follow the completion of the LEA program at each school.

Learning Enhances Awareness LEA – IJMA3 2008 Our Vision The LAB will turn into a CLUB where students will share information on a Peer to Peer level 2 1 3 Competition for the best presentation between all schools
