Facing Decisions DECISION MAKING - the process of making a choice or solving a problem. You make decisions on a daily basis Decisions you make increase or decrease the risk of you getting injured or sick.

Minor and Major Decisions
Minor decisions Simple and almost automatic Often involve only you Have few possible negative consequences Major Decisions Requires serious thought Have serious consequences both positive and negative

State the Situation List the Options Weigh the Possible Outcomes Consider Your Values Make a Decision and Act Evaluate the Decision

Step 1: State the Situation What is the problem? How did the problem occur? Who is involved? How much time do I have to make my decision?

Step 2: List the Options How could I solve the problem? What are the choices? With whom can I talk about the problem?

Step 3: Weigh the Possible Outcomes What are the consequences of each option? How will my choice effect me both now and in the future? Who else will my choice effect and how?

Consider Your Values How does each of my options fit in with my value system? How will my values influence my decision?

Using H.E.L.P. The H. E. L. P. Criteria
H (Healthful) might this lead to injury E (Ethical) is it right to do this? Does it show respect? L (Legal) does doing this break any laws? P (Parent approved) Would my parents approve of me doing this?

Make a Decision and Act What choice shall I make? What do I need to do to follow through on my decision?

Evaluate the Decision What were the consequences of my decision? Did the results turn out as I planned? If I had to do it again would I make the same choice?
