4. Receive
When you fast, do not put on a sad face as the hypocrites do. They neglect their appearance so that everyone will see that they are fasting. I assure you, they have already been paid in full. When you go without food, wash your face and comb your hair, so that others cannot know that you are fasting—only your father, who is unseen, will know. And your Father, who sees what you do in private, will reward you.
From the Gospel according to Matthew, chapter 6, verses 16 to 18.

5. Engage
Many Christians use the practices of prayer, fasting and giving during Lent (the time between Ash Wednesday and Easter).
They do this to help them to be closer to God, to give attention to God and give more readily to others who are in need.
In worship today we focus on fasting.

7. Respond Amen Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ fasted
forty days in the wilderness,
and was tempted as we are, yet without sin:
give us grace to discipline ourselves
in obedience to your Spirit;
and, as you know our weakness,
so may we know your power to save.
Amen
