Brought to China from India about A.D. 150 Taught that people could escape from suffering Many buddhists became nuns and monks Monasteries and temples ran schools, provided rooms and food for travelers and medical care Based on sayings of Confucius People need to have a sense of duty Rulers should set good examples All men with a talent for governing should take part in government

3 Neo-Confucianism Supported by Tang and Song rulers
Life in this world as important as the afterlife More than a system of rules for being good People could find peace and live in harmony with nature.
