1 Some videos for you! Emma Watson: I'm a Feminist
What definition does Watson give of feminism? How have gender and social expectations affected Watson’s life? How are her experiences different from many other women? How does Watson support her point that men are just as confined as women by gender expectations? UN Women has come up with the hashtag HeForShe. Based on Watson’s talk, explain the meaning of the phrase. How would Chopin view Watson’s message? Some videos for you! Brief History of Feminism How has feminism changed throughout history?

2 Chapter 2 What does Mrs. Pontellier look like? What might make her attractive (remember she is “handsome”)? What might the narrator be implying by saying that they “do not know any better” (4) when they talk about themselves? Why does Mdme. Lebrun have residents in her cottages? We learn very small life details about Edna (and Robert). Does she seem overly interested in the life events of her family members? What does this reveal about her? There isn’t much going on, is there? Why might that be the case?

3 Chapter 3 Mr. Pontellier has made Edna “the sole object of his existence” (5). What might be problematic with this? How does Edna respond to Mr. P’s interests? What does this show about their marriage? Her? Edna doesn’t seem to care all that much about her potentially sick child from her husband’s perspective. There is a quote about this somewhere…. Why does Edna begin crying? What usually counteracts Edna’s feelings of “oppression”? How does Edna rationalize her emotions? How connected does Mr. P seem to be to his family at the end of this chapter?
