1 Unit 1.3 Vocabulary Terms 8/22/2017

2 Narrative A story about a series of events that includes a character development, plot structure, and theme. A narrative can be a work of fiction or non-fiction. Examples Bad Magic The Name of this Book is Secret I Am Malala

3 Narrator A person telling the story and is often the protagonist or the main character of the story. Examples Jason Bourne of Bourne Identity James Bond of James Bond 007

4 Character The people, objects, and/or animals who are taking part in a story.

5 Characterization A literary device used to illustrate or explain the details about a character through appearance, speech, action, and/or other’s perception. Examples “She scowled at us, frowning a rude and frightening frown.” (You can characterize the mom as being angry.) “Dr. Warren is the best dentist in the practice.” (You can characterize Dr. Warren as the best dentist.)

6 Plot A sequence of events in a story. The plot includes exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.

7 Theme The message or life lesson presented in the story regarding a subject. The theme may be presented directly or indirectly within a narrative. Example 1. The theme of “The Three Little Pigs”: When an individual takes his/her time and effort to think through what needs to be done, he/she will achieve success.
