Distance and Displacement
2
Motion An object is in motion when its position with respect to another object is changing. If no change than no motion is perceived
3
Distance and Displacement
Distance: The length of a path covered by an object between its initial and final positions. This will vary depending on the route chosen. EXAMPLE: Marble rolls= mm or cm (millimetres or centimetres) Car travels= m or Km ( metres or kilometres) Displacement: The shortest distance between the initial and final positions of an object.
4
Displacement vs Distance
5
Combining Displacements
Displacement is a vector This is a quantity that has a magnitude and a direction Magnitude= size length or amount Arrows on a graph are used to represent vectors. The length of an arrow shows the magnitude of a vector
6
Examples Combining displacements
Vector addition is the combining of vector magnitudes and directions EX: 5 km right 10 km right 5 + 10= 15km right 10 km right 3 km left 10 – 3= 7 km right
