Judge Learned Hand He was one of the most influential judges in America. He served on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York He was born on January 27, 1872, Albany.

When was this text written? 1944 Why was it written? To get people to realize what it meant to be patriotic. What was going on in history when this text was written? World War II was occurring.

Summary Judge Learned Hand wanted anybody who read this story to realize the impact that World War II had on people in America. He also wanted people to be happy through this tragic time in history. This story was based on liberty, freedom, and our soldiers. He was also expressing happiness and strong hearts. He wanted people to ask themselves, what they would for their country.

RELEVANCE Because World War II was tragic, and it helped give people hope for our soldiers, morale and future.
