1 Do Now Turn in past due work (Lab Report & Core Values)
Pick up your calculator. Have out your raffle tickets. I will call your tables up one by one. If you had to give your best guess to the definition of the word MOTION, what would it be? Name something that you consider really slow. Why do you think it’s slow? Name something that you consider really fast. Why do you think it’s fast?

6 Motion What is motion? What does it mean when you say something moves?

7 Motion Definition: A change in position. The ball moved from position 6 to position 3.

8 Speed What is speed? How do you describe it to people?

9 Speed Definition: The rate of motion. (how fast motion happens) Speed is the distance traveled in a given time. Ball 1 moved 5 meters in 2 seconds. (Slower speed) Ball 2 moved 10 meters in 2 seconds. (Faster speed)

10 Calculating Speed Speed = Distance Time

11 Example A football field is about 100 m long. If it takes a person 20 seconds to run its length, how fast were they running (what was their speed)?

12 Example A football field is about 100 m long. If it takes a person 20 seconds to run its length, how fast were they running (what was their speed)? SPEED = DISTANCE/TIME SPEED = 100 M/20 S SPEED = 50 M/S

13 Example If you run at 12 m/s for 15 seconds, how far will you go (what is the distance covered)?

14 Example If you run at 12 m/s for 15 seconds, how far will you go (what is the distance covered)? SPEED = DISTANCE/TIME 12 m/s = DISTANCE/15 seconds (12 m/s)(15 s) = DISTANCE 180 m = DISTANCE

15 Example A bullet travels at 800 m/s. How long will it take a bullet to go 1000 m (how much time will it take)?

16 Example A bullet travels at 800 m/s. How long will it take a bullet to go 1000 m (how much time will it take)? SPEED = DISTANCE/TIME 850 m/s = 1000 m/TIME TIME = 1000 m/800 m/s TIME = 1.25 seconds

17 Partner Guided Practice
The pitcher’s mound in baseball is 80 m from the plate. It takes 4 seconds for a pitch to reach the plate. How fast is the pitch? What is it asking for (speed, distance or time)? Write the equation. Substitute what you know. Solve for what you don’t know.

18 Partner Guided Practice
How long does it take a cheetah to run 180 meters, if its speed is 60 m/s? What is it asking for (speed, distance or time)? Write the equation. Substitute what you know. Solve for what you don’t know.

19 Partner Guided Practice
A frisbee is thrown and travels at a speed of 3 m/s for 5 seconds. How far does it go? What is it asking for (speed, distance or time)? Write the equation. Substitute what you know. Solve for what you don’t know.

20 Individual Guided Practice
We’re going to use the multiple choice notecards to do some quick individual guided practice. Grab a stack for you!
