How do you describe stuff And Identify it?
Properties of matter How do you describe stuff And Identify it?
2
What is matter? Anything that has ____________
And occupies ________________ Which means has a ____________
3
Two kinds of properties
A Property is something we use to describe matter. Non-characteristic properties Gives lots of hints about an unknown piece of matter. Characteristic properties Identifies matter
4
Non-characteristic properties
A regular property or NON-characteristic property gives you hints about what a substance is. If you have lots of them it can help you narrow down the choice but does not identify a substance.
5
Here are some examples Mass (measured in grams)
Volume (measured in mL) State of matter (Is it a solid, a liquid or a gas?) Temperature ( measured in 0C) Acidity (is it acidic, basic or neutral)
6
Characteristic properties
Some properties are so special that they are only true for 1 substance. We call these characteristic properties. These properties are used to identify substances
7
Here are some examples Density Ratio of the mass to the volume D= M/V
(how much stuff is there in this space) D= M/V The temperature of a phase change Boiling point the temperature it is when it changes from a liquid to a gas. Melting point The temperature it is when it changes from a solid to a liquid.
8
To sum up Non characteristic Properties Characteristic Properties Mass
Volume Temperature Phase or state of matter pH (acid, base ,or neutral) Density (M/V) Temperature of a phase change
