By 369 CE it was obvious that the Roman Empire was facing many problems. These problems eventually caused the empire to collapse. By about 500 CE the Empire had fallen apart.
A cause is a reason why something happens.
A consequence is something that happens because of something else.

Powerful generals kept fighting among themselves about who should be the next emperor
Soldiers wanted more pay
The borders were costing more and more to defend
In 73 years, there were 23 emperors. 20 of these were murdered
Poor people were driven to crime
The Empire needed a strong army to protect its borders
The defenses of the empire were strong on the edges but weak in the middle
Once tribes broke through the defenses it was easy to keep going
Many Roman citizens began to rebel against their rulers

On page 58, pick one of your series of connections and explain why you connected them and how are they related

6. Assignment
On your sheet number the problems according to which you think was the most serious faced by the Roman Empire. Number 1 for the biggest problem, up to 12 for the smallest problem.

7. Assignment
On page 58 write out the biggest problem faced by the Roman Empire.
Explain why you choose it.
Write down any possible solutions to it.
Repeat for your second and third biggest problems.

8. Ticket Out the Door
Students will stand up and clearly state what the biggest problem facing the Roman Empire and their solution to the problem.
