2. Kilmainham Jail
Kilmainham Jail is a former Jail that is situated in Kilmainham in Dublin. However, today it is only open for tours.
Kilmainham Jail was first built in Before it was a built a dungeon was standing there but they knocked that down and built and new jail in its place.
When it was first built public hangings actually took place in its grounds.
Men, women and children were all placed in the same cell, up to 5 people would share the same tiny cell. With only a single candle for light and heat, most of their time was spent in the cold and the dark. The candle had to last the prisoner for one week

Some old famous prisoners include: Eamon de Valera, Joseph Plunket , Padraig Pearce, James Connolly and Countess Markievicz.

5. The role of Kilmainham Jail in Irish History.
Since its opening, Kilmainham Jail has been understood as one of the most important Irish monuments of the modern time.
The majority of the Irish leaders in the rebellions of  1798, 1803, 1848, 1867 and 1916 were imprisoned there.
