Center of Gravity Chapter 10
2
Center of Gravity Point at the center of an object’s weight distribution where the force of gravity can be considered to act. Interchangeable with the term “center of mass”
3
Locating the Center of Gravity
Uniform object (example: ruler) Midpoint or geometric center Irregular object Suspend any object (pendulum) at a single point, the CG of the object will hang directly below (or at) the point of suspension. If you do this 3 times from 3 different points in the object, the intersection of the 3 will be the CG.
4
The CG of an object may be located where no actual material exists.
Example: CG of a basketball is located in the middle of the sphere of the basketball
5
CG and toppling If the CG of an object is above the area of support, the object will remain upright. If the CG of an object extends outside the area of support, the object will topple.
