Why Do We Have Laws?

Before we have a law, we must have a bill
Before we have a law, we must have a bill. A bill is an idea for a law written on a piece of paper.

This bill is created by Congress
This bill is created by Congress. Congress is made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

For our nation: For our state:
If Congress votes on the bill, they send it to the president. If the president doesn’t like the bill, he can veto, or reject, the bill. For our state: If Congress votes on the bill, they send it to the governor. If the governor doesn’t like the bill, he can veto, or reject, the bill.

If the president likes a bill, he will sign it and make it a law for our nation. For our state: If the governor likes a bill, he will sign it and make it a law for our state.

When a bill becomes a law, everyone must follow it
When a bill becomes a law, everyone must follow it. If someone breaks the law, he or she will go to court.
