Non-fiction writing is writing that is true Argument and Commentary is writing that is true Argument and Commentary is commonly found in newspapers (Check the Op-ed/Opinion section) Argument and Commentary is also found in magazines such as Sports Illustrated and ESPN.

Pieces of writing in which an author expresses his or her opinion about an issue Issue is important to the author and a wider audience Can be based on research Can be based on author’s awareness to different sides of an issue Can be based on author’s ability to make sense of an issue

A person ranting on an issue An angry letter to an editor

5 What is the Purpose of Argument and Commentary?
To express your view on an issue that is important to you Could be a current event, historical event, trend, policy issue, or respond to views of others You might be trying to persuade others to agree with you You might be drawing attention to an issue that is over looked You might just be stating an opinion

6 What are Some Tips for Writing Argument and Commentary?
Ask questions to introduce a topic Exaggerate to make a point or add humor Use sarcasm when appropriate Use a list of adjectives to describe Give solutions if your topic presents a problem Use a title that grabs the reader’s interest Use shocking facts (must to FACTS!) Choose a topic you are passionate about
