Figurative Language Personification: gives human characteristics to non-human things (objects, animals, feelings) Example: The volcano belched smoke and ash. Simile: direct comparison of two unlike things that uses words such as “like” or “as” Example: Life is like a box of chocolates. Metaphor: indirect comparison of two unlike things that does not use words of comparison such as “like” or “as” Example: Life is a bowl of cherries. Symbolism: use of an object to represent another object, person, idea, or emotion Example: Dove = Peace Skull = Death Allusion: a reference to a familiar person, place, thing, or event outside the text--usually requires outside knowledge
