TEEAL Structure Topic Sentence: What your writing about - one idea per paragraph Explanation: How or why this statement is true in relation to the set questions. Evidence: Where or when we see it in the film or novel. This might be direct (quote) or indirect a specific event or character trait as seen in the text studied. Analysis: (critical thinking here - you need to interpret what your example shows about the idea the author or film make was trying to show the audience) It is your discussion of what BIG idea the author is showing or suggesting about the character and how this reflects something about human nature in general . Linking sentence: (Reinforces what and why). This sentence is where you show how your paragraph supports your stance in relation to the question.

Example Question: How does grief affect characters in the film?
T: Grief affects many characters in the film, Dr Larabee is one such character. E: While it is not revealed at first, Dr Larabee has recently lost his daughter. His grief at her loss means he has left his teaching position and is quite cold and reserved in his interactions with other people. E: This detached demeanour is shown in the film when we first see him at the school in a very formal and intimidating suit standing high upon the staircase looking down on Akeelah. A: Dr Larabee stays away from other people in order to cope with his loss; by not getting close to other people, he doesn't risk being hurt again. L: In this, we see that grief can sometimes mean that we isolate ourselves from others in an attempt to cope with our sadness.
