Implementation of a Radioactive Waste Management Program
Focused on the Development of Waste Process Technologies to Minimize Waste Volumes and to Improve Storage Capacity S. Alves, N. Oliva and L. Varandas ELETRONUCLEAR has a Waste Management Program responsible for the implementation of actions and processes managing for mitigating radwastes in NPPs Angra 1 and 2. In order to achieve the reduction in generated waste volumes and to increase storage capacity, modifications in current treatment processes was made like the chemical and radiological decontamination of metallic wastes generated in NPP Angra 1 in the system available in NPP Angra 2 and Super-compaction of the already produced compressible solid waste packages along with an effective segregation program. The company is also evaluating the elimination of the immobilization of the radwastes in cement (Angra 1) and in bitumen (Angra 2), besides the implementation of selective resins filtering process (Angra 1) and “in drum drying systems” to treat the liquid radwaste in NPPs Angra 2 and 3. The commissioning of the liquid radwaste transfer station (transfer through a container mounted in a mobile vehicle) is in progress to reduce evaporate concentrate generation in NPP Angra 1 and the monitoring building facility (final construction) will provide the segregation of compressible solid wastes that can be discharged as conventional industrial wastes.
