2 Labor Movement In the industrial post Civil-War era, there were 2 types of Unions. (Craft/Trade & Industrial) figure 8.1 page 198. Union Activities- Tried to help workers by negotiating for higher pay, job security & better hours/working conditions.

3 Cont… Strike- refuse to work until certain demands were met.
Picket- parade in front of the business carrying signs about the dispute. Boycott- refusal to buy products from the company.

4 Still Cont… Lockout- management refusal to let employees work until demands are met. Company Union- union organized, supported or run by an employer. What was the Ludlow Massacre (pg ) in Colorado? Courts did not have a good attitude toward unions in this period.

5 Labor since the 1930’s Great Depression- worst period of economic decline in U.S. history. Page 201. National Labor Relations Act or Wagner Act of right of unions to collective bargain. Also created the National Labor Relations Board to police unfair labor practices.

6 Cont… Right-to-Work Law- State law making it illegal to force workers to join a union as a condition of employment, even though a union may already exist. What is the AFL-CIO? Independent Unions- unions that do not belong to the AFL-CIO.

7 Still Cont… Closed Shop- arrangement under which workers must join a union before they are hired. Union Shop-workers must join a union after being hired. Modified Union Shop- option of workers to join union after being hired.

8 Still, Still Cont… Agency Shop- shop where nonunion workers must pay union dues. Civilian Labor Force- part of the population aged 16 or over either working or looking for a job. Look at figure 8.3 page 205
