1 AP LANG 8/10/2017 DAY 1

2 BELLWORK (DO NOW!) – 3 min. Materials: blank sheet of notebook paper, writing utensil Due Dates/Reminders: Binders by Monday. Summer Assignments due in class Friday, August 18th. Warm-up tasks: 1) Choose a seat for the day. 2) Use the construction paper and make a “Name Tent” – BIG & on both sides. 3) Title your notebook paper “Intro. to Rhetoric.” Underneath, independently complete the acronym “AP” in 3 creative ways., considering what AP classes entail. For example, “AP” could stand for Accelerated Procrastination, Abused Pupils, or Adventurous Period (it will be the latter).

3 Objectives for today-1 min.
Clarify course intent and expectations Determine the extent to which rhetoric is present in our lives. Describe our style as rhetors.

4 Small Group Discussion- 6 min.
Starting with the person whose birthday is coming soonest and going around to the left, share your responses to the bellwork question, and form a consensus as to which response(s) your group feels most accurate or entertaining. Next, elect a recorder to copy your response onto your construction paper, and a elect a speaker who will share it and your rationale with the class.

5 Whole Class Discussion- 7 min.
Why did we choose these responses? What do they suggest about our expectations of AP and its expectations of us?

6 Class information- 5 min.

7 Rhetoric-3 min. Where have you heard this word used before?
Can anyone define it?

8 Rhetoric- the art of persuasion-3 min.
When we strive to convince others of our opinions, we are rhetors. When we analyze the arguments of others, we are rhetoricians. The way we communicate--the words we choose, how we organize them, our tone, our audience, the context in which we speak--permeates every aspect of our world. Rhetoric is everywhere, because everything is some kind of argument.

9 Whole Class discussion- 5 min.
Where do we see rhetoric in our daily lives?

10 What kind of rhetor are you?
*What am I asking of you in that question? Consider, and jot down one word that describes you as a rhetor. Once we have finished, we will go around the room, introduce ourselves, and give our responses.
